Jewelry Designer Network

Welcome to the Jewelry Designer Network ... JewelryNetwork.org

So, if you guys read my profile, you know I HATE taking pictures of my jewelry... which don't turn out that great. Well, I was surfing around the internet and I was dead tired, it was late and as I was turning off my computer, I read that you can scan your jewelry in your scanner! Oh my gosh, I was thrilled. BUT, now I'm revamping my website and soon, my network forum. Big work ahead of me but I'm so excited about the new pics.

Hey Michelle-check out my blog post about taking pictures of your jewelry-this way requires a camera.

three of my pics are scanned. you an put back grounds by using different paper (ie. scrapbooking, Hand-made paper, just black or white) can you guess which ones?

I used to scan my jewelry when I first started out, with a flatbed scanner-it produced very crisp, clear photos of my jewelry. I have some of them posted on here, with the dark beige colored background. My house was broken into and the scanner was taken along with my whole computer system a couple years ago, and I could never find a scanner that would take pictures as well as that one did! Since I started using a digital camera I really like the freedom I have to take pictures wherever I want, with any background or props I want to use-I'm still learning and experimenting with it.

Oh my gosh, that just sucks about your house being broken into... I'm sorry, that must've been awful. A year ago, I had all of my jewelry in a bin and my sister would take it to her work [assisted elderlry complex] and one day her car was broken into and everything was stolen. I totally feel for you.
I think if I had a better camera, I would have better pictures too. You have great pics of your jewelry and you already know that you have a lot of great pieces. The pics tips are cool though. I think I'm going to play with some different colored paper when I scan some more jewelry?
Have a great day and happy beading.

That's awful-your jewelry-insurance can replace the materials, if they're still available, but not the hard work and care that goes into making each piece. The worst part about my house was it was a neighbor-friend actually, who I'd known 6 yrs-that did it. Turned out she had developed a drug problem and wanted money for that. She had 3 kids at home too, one in a wheelchair with cerebral palsy. I worked nights then, and had dropped off a dozen donuts for her and her kids on my way home the morning before! It's always the ones you least expect.
The camera I've been using is my boyfriend's. It's an older digital camera, plus my hands aren't so steady, so it takes me a lot of shots to get just a few I like. When I scanned my jewelry I used to look online for backgrounds and print them out on a whole page, then you can just lay it over the jewelry, or tape it to the lid of the scanner. I used email stationary I found online, it would print out as a whole page and not have to be tiled like a lot of backgrounds. You could even try some gift wrap, or fabric, that has a subtle design, etc...
Post some pics and let us see how they turned out :D

I forked up some mulah and bout some display stands and a mini photo studio that's 16x16x16 and it works marvelously. I looove setting up my jewelry for pics. I enjoy photography so it's kind of like doing two hobbies in one. It fits right on my desk and I got flowered boas from craft stores and set up flowers around the stands, etc but it's so worth it. They really come out great. Plus I sell a lot of miscellaneous stuff on ebay and it helps for that as well. You get great clear pics thanks to the photo box and lights. You don't have to use a flash which can reflect off certain spots and make it hard to show the real colors in your items. when you're not using it, it folds down into a case no bigger than a laptop bag. and it's got compartments for your lights and a handle to carry it around. Very transportable. So you could set it up outside (if you have plugs available) and get a very unique shot of your box and jewelry with a background of scenery. It's so much fun!

Hey Lauren,
I bought that mini photo studio. I'm still playing around with it but have noticed a vast improvement with my pictures. Now I have a huge project ahead of me... retake all my jewelry pictures, take them off my website and put the new ones up. I'm really not looking forward to that job. lol

Thanks for sharing your mini photo studio with us.
