Jewelry Designer Network

Welcome to the Jewelry Designer Network ... JewelryNetwork.org

I have to vent! I have started discussions before asking you all for suggestions on what websites to use to open an on-line store. Shop-it was suggested and Etsy. I am frustrated because I have spent 4 days now just trying to sign on and "get going" with either of those to no avail. Every where I turn with Shop-it, I run into a road block. Something that doesn't work. So I can't get past the "store name" part because it won't accept what I put in. Then with Etsy, I used to be signed up with them a few years ago. Because of that, it "closed" my account so it won't accept my e-mail now. So....I opened up a new e-mail account to use on Etsy. I haven't gotten a confirmation e-mail since signing up two days ago so I can't do anything with Etsy either! I am just about to throw my computer out the window!!! Any suggestions? If not, thanks for listening :-)

I hear your frustrations !

I just can't help but come back to suggesting a "stand alone" cart.. You have complete control over everything. Access to an Administrative and also a control panel via the host of your choice..

Your frustrations are sort of an example of just some of the downfalls with dependence upon these community type selling venues.

I use ZenCart.. It has quite a learning curve, but with a lot of help from members at my favorite online business developing forums, it turned out to be a huge success.

Candy Press is pretty popular and here are some others you might want to check out.

It took me a long time to get away from selling on eBay.. I let myself get in a rut of depending on it for my selling venue..
I am so glad it is left in the dust.. Grateful for the experience. A selling venue like eBay, Etsy and others are good stepping stones, but seems like anyone who is really serious about online business development, sales, and marketing all find ourselves moving away from these venues and into a stand alone site.

I think it's safe to say Shopit really blew it when they recently changed everything. A couple of weeks ago thought I'd try redoing some of the photos of my work in my shop there. I had such a hard time navigating through the site, couldn't find any help in help, and finally gave up after just over an hour of wasted time. More than likely going to go back once more just to delete my account for good.

I'm still thinking about Etsy as a possibility mainly for extra exposure but I have to agree with George-your own website is the best way to go. At least you'll have control of any changes that take place on the site! Just DON'T throw the computer out the window!!!

Check the spam filter
Your e-mail provider may be filtering it as spam
The email from etsy may have gotten stuck there
I hope you get it worked out

Hi, if you are looking to start an easy and inexpensive website you can go to this link http://smallbusiness.officelive.com/en-us/pricing this is a microsoft service that runs about 14.95US a yr. There are several other things you can do for a minimal charge, and it appears to be quit easy.

Hope this helps,
Cindy

Hello J. Lynn:

I have just now noticed your frustration notice that was posted on 26 June 2009 (incidently that is my wife's birthday). Anyway, I would like to suggest to you that a wonderful new site to post your items for sale on is "Bonanzle.com". It is very easy to use and the most friendly site around. Everyone connected with that site is most friendly and helpful to everyone. good luck and please give them a try. Vince vinces jewelry gallery

Did you ever get your Etsy situation worked out? Have you ventured into some of the other really "hot" selling venues right now? Artfire, Made It Myself, eCrator, Zibbit? I own a ning social networking page of my own and lots of my people belong to these new places and are getting better hits and sales. You do not get lost in the masses of people on Etsy. I am on Etsy and Artfire and Made It Myself and Bonanzle (as someone mentioned). Also I get a lot of exposure having my own website and posting it on my Ning page http://artisanjewelrydesigners.ning.com. E-mail me if you want further info about some of these sites. They only charge a monthly fee and it is not real expensive and you can have your own cart on some of them to handle sales. The primary focus of my ning page is to promote jewelry designers and other artisans. So, we have lots of groups that do just that. you can e-mail me directly at sharon_hightower@hotmail.com if you want any more info.
